作者迦多尼是位博学的历史学者，也曾当过校长。他是一位诗人，也写过剧本，但真正让他在文坛留名的却是这本于1901年完成的历史小说。 为写此书，他钻研历史背景，读遍欧洲古籍，寻找所有关于匈奴人的史料，还到法国中部古战场寻找历史临场感。此外，他研究罗马人与匈奴人的战法，为求逼真，战争场面重写了许多回。
